Mine is a small cropped portion of an older painting. The original was on sanded pastel paper that was first toned with a thin oil wash. Because the painting is not mounted (it's hinged on top), the oil wash caused a slight rippling of the paper, so the painting doesn't photograph well. I've done alcohol washes numerous times in pastel, and done some other things that are rather unusual (polyurethane varnish, for example), without buckling the paper, but the oil didn't work so well (though others have used oil washes without problems). Oh well - live and learn.
