- OMG that bread looks delicious and those pies, a dream!!! Baker can I have them for free? I admire the way you baked them and if people come to my house and I serve your glorious pastries I will not forget to mention it came from you baker because you are the best baker I know! I actually want all that is in your shop today, I have a huge party and imagine the publicity you will get dear baker, me serving all your stuff! You lucky devil, that you have people like me who really appreciate your creations so much!
No! Simply because people KNOW no baker would fall for it!
But us artists??? OMG of course!!! Art is out there and we can serve ourselves right!
Who cares if someone has to put in a hundred hours to make it and years of heavy training before that.
And then, of the two categories of people who want your art for free frankly i do not know which ones are worst (and popular crayon may not be so popular writing this but i need to get this rant off my chest anyway!)
first comes the thieves : Of course we all despise the thieves, that is a clear category, nobody likes a thief and people cry hue and hold about thieves
but i do not know how to deal with the other category, the ones who ask nicely.
Can i have your art for free, to use for this and that and of course nobody can ever pay. They may be ashamed to ask for a little pie at the bakery but art, oh no, the more the merrier!
Then what do you say as an artist to the category number two people? Because they tell you, look, I am a sweet person i do not steal so can i have it for free, I did not steal, right? And THAT is what is supposed to make you happy?
So what do you reply to requests of that ilk that come in your mailbox frequently? I for one never know. If i flatly refuse I feel like a dispicable ogre and if i say yes I feel like I let people cut pieces out of my flesh for free and believe me neither options feel good.
So I think that people with meagre revenues who adore your art should at least have the decency to propose you a little something, a year's sub, buying prints of what you are going to use, or at least SOMETHING. A starving artist might be happy with that already and feel generous and grant you the permission but most of all feel appreciated somehow and not merely taken advantage off.
End of rant, god bless you all during the holidays
